Materials selection policy ready for library board vote

Friday, January 26, 2007

The Marshall Public Library Materials Selection Policy Committee met for the last time on Thursday, Jan. 25, to finalize the second draft of the materials selection policy.

After a few grammatical errors were identified in the policy, Marshall Public Library Director Amy Crump made the corrections and brought the committee a proposed draft.

The committee is meeting in response to objections raised over two graphic novels, "Blankets" by Craig Thompson, and "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel, which the library board pulled from the shelves last fall.

While the proposed draft was being printed, library staff member Priscilla McReynolds presented the committee with a sample disposal slip that will be inserted into the books during the weeding process.

The committee read through the 11-page policy proposed draft one last time and voted. The committee unanimously passed the policy.

The materials selection policy will present the policy to the library board at the Wednesday, Feb. 7, meeting at 7 p.m. for any additional changes or adoption.
