Helen Marie Absher, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, in Columbia.

She was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Boone County, Iowa, the daughter of Fred F. Gildea and Bernice Boyd Gildea. She graduated from Luther Consolidated High School, Luther, Iowa, in 1940, received a bachelor of science degree in home economics frm Iowa State University at Ames in 1944, and a master of science degree in education from Long Beach State University, Long Beach, Calif., in 1956. She married Eugene L. "Gene" Absher June 30, 1946, in Luther, Iowa; he survives of the home. She taught in Malta Bend; Garner, Iowa; Boone, Iowa; and Anaheim Union High School District, Anaheim, Calif., from which she retired in 1978. In retirement, she was active for 16 years in the volunteer fire department of Lake of the Ozarks, was a medical first responder, served as treasurer of VFW Post No. 3600 Auxiliary in Climax Springs, and was an 18-year volunteer at Harry S Truman Veteran's Hospital in Columbia.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Harold Gildea of Boone, Iowa, and William Gildea of Bullhead City, Ariz.; one sister, Lois Riker of Boone, Iowa; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
