Thursday, December 7, 2006

The first Slater Winter Fest will be Saturday, Dec. 9 and Sunday, Dec.10, in downtown Slater.

Councilman Terry Jordan updated the Slater City Council on the event during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Jordan said that 14 businesses had signed up to participate in the Winter Fest. The businesses will offer sales and specials to go along with the events planned for the festival.

Mayor Stephen Allegri encouraged Slater residents to attend.

"It would be a good time to do some Christmas shopping," Allegri said, adding that residents should remember that when they spend money in Slater, the sales tax goes to benefit the city.

"When you spend money here it stays here." Allegri said.

Other events planned for the Winter Fest include a ham and biscuit meal at the State Bank of Slater at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Slater Chamber of Commerce will hold a children's Christmas Party and Hay Ride, and children can visit Santa at the Slater Youth Center from 9 to 11 a.m.

The Kansas City Southern Santa Train comes to Slater on Sunday, at 4 p.m. at the railroad depot.

Allegri urged everyone to attend the Santa Train event. "For anybody who hasn't seen it they'll be amazed," Allegri said.

At the event children can visit with Santa Claus before touring the train which will be decorated with holiday displays.

In other business, the council discussed the plans for the first annual Steve McQueen Day which will be held on McQueen's birthday of March 24 to honor the famous movie actor who spent his boyhood in Slater.

Events that are currently being planned are a film festival, car and motorcycle show, tours of sites associated with McQueen and a book signing by McQueen's widow.

"We think this will bring some people to town," City Administrator Gene Griffith said. "There is still a lot of interest in this (McQueen's past in Slater)."
