Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall. Fr. Kevin Gormley will officiate. Prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Visitation will follow from 7 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall with military rites. Pallbearers will be Corey Carney, Ryan Carney, Mike Gilmore, Chad Gilmore and Craig Miller. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church.
Born Feb. 22, 1919, in Marshall, he was the son of the late Charles C. "Bud" Smith and Lavylette Maddox Smith. He was a 1935 graduate of Marshall High School. On April 14, 1939, he married Frances Louise "Sis" Calhoun, who preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1998. He had lived in Marshall most of his life. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus Council 876 for more than 60 years. He had worked at International Shoe Company from 1935 to 1948. In September of 1948 he began working at Missouri National Guard Armory and was the administrator, retiring on Feb. 22, 1979 as Chief W-4 Warrant Officer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving from October 1944 to March 1945.
Survivors include one son, Chuck Smith and wife, Lynda, of Warsaw; two daughters, Linda Gilmore and husband, Jim, of Marshall, and Susan Carney and husband, Doug, of Marshall; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles D. "Ug" Smith.
