Chief Petty Officer USNR William J. Burks, 70, of Slater, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Rev. Robert Sisney will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon Friday at the Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to the Slater Veterans Memorial Park.
Born May 28, 1936, in Slater, he was the son of the late Louis Willard Burks and Catherine Lucille Kruger Burks. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Slater. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served 24 years of active duty until his retirement. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 78 and V.F.W. Post No. 4367, both in Slater. Following his retirement from the military, he owned and operated B & G Lounge in Slater, and later worked for the city of Slater.
He is survived by two daughters, Connie J. Hughes of Independence and Glenda Sue Wood of Altoona, Fla.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Ricky D. Burks of Slater and Donald J. Burks of Moberly; two sisters, Dorothy M. Durham of Marshall and Marsha S. Heard of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Ann Burks.
