A dog waits for a new owner at the Saline Animal League shelter in Marshall. Stray or abandoned animals available for adoption in Marshall are listed on the Internet site www.petfinder.com.
The Saline Animal League has been putting adoptable pets online for viewing by potential pet-owners for seven years and has had success with the process.

"We've had a lot of success," said Sheila Blalock, the league president. "We've had people adopt from as far away as Arizona and Vermont."

The success comes from the Web site, www.petfinder.com, where the animals are listed. Blalock said that users can search for certain breeds of dogs and listings of that breed appear complete with photos and descriptions.

"It's very user-friendly," Blalock said.

Blalock also said that they have had quite a bit of local success with the Web site as well. Users can select a certain geographical area to search for animals or they can view the league's own petfinder Web site (www.petfinder.com/shelters/MO369.html) which lists some of the animals that the league has available.

Recently, Marshall Animal Control Officer Chris Pittman also began putting stray or abandoned animals on the Web as well.

"It's great," Pittman said. "The first two dogs I put on there are gone."

Blalock said that while the league has been successful in getting many pets adopted, there are still a lot of animals that need homes.

"Unfortunately we are not a no-kill shelter," Blalock said. "We do everything we can to find homes for the animals, but when we run out of room ..."

Blalock said that sometimes people bring in unwanted pets thinking that they will find a good home, but it doesn't always happen. The shelter should be considered "a last resort," Blalock said.

The shelter is usually crowded with animals. Typically there are 20 to 40 dogs and the same number of cats in the shelter at any given time.

Blalock said that the league can always use additional help, especially in helping get more of the animals on the Web.

"If there's someone out there who wants to help, that's great. We'd love to teach them how to take pictures and put them on the Web," Blalock said, adding that it takes at least two people -- one to hold the animal and one take the photo.

Interested volunteers should call the league at (660) 831-0420.

The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to noon.
