Reed A. Kepner, 71, of Marshall, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City after a brief illness.
His ashes will be interred on his grandmother's grave after a family memorial service in Brookfield, Ohio, in Township Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Missouri Valley College will have a memorial service in his honor during Homecoming weekend on Oct. 14, 2006, at 6 p.m. in the Eckilson-Mabee Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missouri Valley College Reed Kepner Memorial Greenhouse Fund.
He was born on Oct. 27, 1934, at home, in Hartford Ohio. He was the son of Roy L. and Marion Smith Kepner. He taught biology and other science courses at Missouri Valley College from 1962 until he retired in 1998, at which time he was awarded the John McCallum Excellence in Teaching Award, bestowed by the school. During his career he served as a coach for various athletic teams at the college. He was also an athletic trainer for the Viking athletics football program. He was inducted into the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 for his many years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he continued to be involved with college, both in the classroom and as a supporter of the college's athletic programs.
He was a member of the Hartford Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Saline County Historical Society, the American Horticultural Society and was an associate member of Powell Gardens.
He is survived by two aunts and numerous cousins and family members.
