Virginia M. North, 80, of Slater, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006 at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Slater. Rev. Robert Sisney officiated. Bethany Weiker, organist, accompanied Gerald Gerhard in "Amazing Grace" and "Whispering Hope." Visitation was held from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial was in the Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jess Young, T. C. Malan, Willie Bryson, Carl Young, Tom Malan and Lindell Boling. Memorials are suggested to the Slater Veterans Memorial Park in care of Weiker Funeral Home.

Born Nov. 27, 1925, in Saline County, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Alice Howell Shepard. She married Bert W. North on June 1, 1944, in Sedalia. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 2006. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Slater, and a long-time Slater area resident.

She is survived by a son, Wesley North of Higginsville; two daughters, Karen Avery of rural Slater and Kathy McGary of Glasgow; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles North; four brothers and two sisters.
