Alfred Vernon Miller, 83, of Slater, died Sunday, Oct. 1., 2006, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia.
Graveside services with military honors will be Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Slater City Cemetery. Rev. Lowell D. Moore will officiate. Pallbearers will be Vernie Jackson, Mark Jackson, Rusty Jackson, Bo Jackson, Toby Mullins and Larry Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Spradley and Bill Cobb. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Weiker Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Slater Veterans Memorial Park.
Born Jan. 20, 1923, in Slater, he was the son of the late Alfred and Sarah Jane Johnson Miller. He was married to Frances Marie Green, and she preceded him in death. On April 20, 1946, in Sheridan, Ore., he married Alice Roberts, and she preceded him in death on April 14, 1980. On Jan. 14, 1981, in Slater, he married Shirley Bennington, and she preceded him in death on March 10, 1997. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed carpenter and cattleman. He was a life-long Slater resident.
He is survived by a son, Larry V. Miller of New York, N.Y.; step-son Rusty Jackson of Slater; step-son Vernie Jackson of Slater; step-son Mark Jackson of Slater; a step-daughter, Penny Parrish of Slater; a granddaughter; 13 step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Verna Marie Miller; a brother, Otis Miller; and a sister, Susie Miller.
