Elmer W. Smith, 86, of Slater, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at the Mar-Saline Manor in Marshal.
Military graveside services will be Thursday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Slater City Cemetery, Rev. Jess Spurgin will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post No. 78 in Slater.
Born Feb. 12, 1920, in Fayette, he was the son of the late James Smith and Anna Gallemore Smith Roberts. On Oct. 24, 1941, in Warrensburg, he married Dorothy Ann Lewis, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 2002.
He is survived by a son, Charles (Chuck) Smith of Chancellor, Ala.; a daughter, Vicki Lightfoot of Slater; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Smith was a member of the Slater Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He had worked at Safeway Grocers, Smith Food Locker and the Slater IGA until his retirement.
