Mary D. Sheetz-Riley, 102, of Marshall, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Mar-Saline Manor in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall. Rev. Dave Huck will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Born June 25, 1904, in Arrow Rock, she was the daughter of the late Walter M. Diggs and Betty E. Kincheloe Diggs. On Oct. 19, 1929, she married Walter D. Sheetz, who preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1974. On Oct. 23, 1982, she married Wallace H. Riley, who preceded her in death Nov. 24, 1988. She had lived in Saline County most of her life and was a school teacher for 33 years, 26 of those years were at Marshall public schools teaching junior high general science. In 1927 she received an associate bachelor's degree from Central Methodist College in Fayette and in 1950 she received a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She did additional graduate studies at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville and at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Wesleyan Circle and the Sewing Circle of the church. She has been a member and actively involved in the Marshall Teachers' Association, Saline County Area Retired Teachers' Association, Missouri Retired Teachers' Association, Monday Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Survivors include one stepson, Charles Riley of Fulton; one stepdaughter, Ann L. Moran of Sanibel, Fla.; five stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Dr. A.E. Diggs, Jesse L. Diggs, Fitzhugh Diggs and W. Morris Diggs; one sister in infancy, Mable Naomi Diggs; and one nephew, Darrell G. Diggs.
