Horace Junis Poindexter, 94, of Boonville, formerly of Blackwater, died Sunday, June 18, at Riverdell Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home in Boonville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 23, at the funeral home.
Born Jan. 8, 1912, in Blackwater, he was the son of the late Sampson and Madge Stapleton Poindexter. He attended Dunbar School in Blackwater. He was employed by the O'Neal and Oswald families for many years. He was a member of Second Christian Church in Blackwater and was also a member of New Hanibal Lodge Charter No. 20 for over 40 years. He was a sergeant in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. He was a buffalo solder in the 10th Cavalry during World War II and served in the machine gun infantry, where he trained soldiers. During his military career he was stationed in Africa and Italy.
Survivors include four nieces, Margaret Poindexter of Chelsea, Mass., Alesia Poindexter of Fayette, Irma Adell Bruce and husband William of Kansas City and Willa Jones of Kansas City; four nephews, Jaye Poindexter and wife Donna of Aurora, Ill., Keith Poindexter and wife Juliette of Dorchester, Mass., Sylvester Briscoe of Brighton, Mass., and Davide Briscoe and wife Cannie of Columbia; a host of greatnieces, greatnephews, relatives and friends. He shared a very special relationship with his greatnephew, Michael Poindexter, and his friend, Mrs. Thaney Oswald.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and two nephews.
