Burton stepping down at Valley

Friday, June 16, 2006

Missouri Valley College is seeking a replacement for head women's soccer coach Derek Burton, who is stepping down to take an assistant's position at NCAA Division I Iowa State.

During his five years at the helm, the St. Louis native and 1997 Arkansas-Little Rock graduate led the Lady Vikings to a 54-28-7 record. In 2002, Burton was named Heart of America Conference "coach of the year," Valley reaching the quarterfinals of the NAIA Region V Tournament.

Before coming to MVC, Burton had coached one season at Mount Senario (Wis.), the No. 10 seed at the NAIA Championships that year, three years as an assistant at Morehead State (Ky.) -- helping to establish the school's women's program -- and one season at his alma mater.

Burton has coached 22 all-conference, seven all-region, four all-America and a dozen NAIA scholar-athletes while at Valley.
