Nellie Thornton, 83, of Slater, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, at First Baptist Church in Slater. Rev. Robert Sisney will officiate. Bethany Weiker, organist, will accompany Rev. Sisney as he sings "How Great Thou Art." She will accompany Mary Lee Sisney as she sings "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers will be Charlie Guthrie, Robert Aulgur, Larry Aulgur, Toby Rich, Mark Jackson and Don Howard. Honorary pallbearers will be Warren Kiso, William Kilgore, Charles Berlekamp, Leo Galloway, Dale Thomas, Henry Hunter, William Jacobson, Harry Lightfoot, Joe Staton, Charles Hannaford and Shane Smith. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Born May 8, 1922, in Blue Lick, she was the daughter of the late George Wilbur Barton and Margaret Welch Barton. On Aug. 11, 1944, in Hattiesburg, Miss., she married Charles P. Thornton Sr., who preceded her in death Nov. 22, 1996. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Slater and the Slater Garden Club, 401 Couples Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Slater Travel Club.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Thornton of Franklin; one daughter, Barbara J. Howard of Slater; five sisters, Mable Tennill of Slater, Mary Melies of Liberty, Alline Moore of Marshall, Gertrude Moore of Marshall and Edelia Compton of Marshall; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles P. "Sonny" Thornton Jr.; and two brothers.
