Elsa "Alice" Bertok Merliss, 84, of Meriden, Conn., died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2005, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Ferry Funeral Home in Meriden. Friends are invited to pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at the funeral home, 88 E. Main St. in Meriden. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden.
Born Sept. 4, 1921, in Wallingford, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Wendell and Bessie Bertok. On July 31, 1947, in Valhalla, N.Y., she married Mark Harold Merliss, who survives. She was a graduate of Lyman High School and Meriden Business School and worked as a secretary for New Departure in Meriden. She was an Avon Products sales representative for 50 years, winning numerous President's Awards, until her retirement in 2002.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Wendy Merliss Leslie and husband Ed of Marshall and Melissa Merliss and Joseph Avella of Berlin, Conn.; three sons, Mark "Rick" Merliss and wife Jo, Robert Merliss and wife Gail and David Merliss of Meriden; nine grandchildren, Julie Steffens of Blackburn, Joy Leslie of Concordia, Amanda Leslie of Marshall, Marisa Merliss of New York City, N.Y., Mark Joseph Merliss of Meriden, Erik Merliss of Meriden, Christine Merliss of Meriden, Melinda Merliss of Berlin and Nicole Avella of Berlin; three great-grandchildren, Megan Steffens, Kristin Steffens and Kylie Steffens, all of Blackburn; several nieces and nephews and beloved caregiver Janet Kabai.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Bette Wolf and Jerri Bannett; and one son, Jonathan Craig Merliss.
