Valley harriers near stretch run

Valley sophomore Anthony Flores posted his best college time at the SIU-E "Border Wars" meet.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Missouri Valley College sophomore Anthony Flores placed 32nd in a field of 296 runners Saturday during the "Border Wars" cross country meet at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Flores beat his personal-best time by four seconds -- set during the massive Missouri Southern State "Southern Stampede" in Joplin on Sept. 17, where he finished 70th -- with an eight-kilometer mark of 26:34.81. The Vikings were 19th out of 29 teams, second among Heart of America Conference schools, with 505 points.

Senior Adam Lofton (27:47.07) was 118th, senior Eric Thomas (28.01.88) placed 140th, freshman Marc-Andre Paulin (28:16.86) -- knocking nearly three-quarters of a second off his fastest time -- came in 151st and junior Josh Smith (28:33.36) finished 165th by shaving over nine seconds from his standard.

Junior Jessica Buchanan (20:24.79), an NAIA qualifier last year, topped the Lady Vikings by coming in 87th out of 216 entries. Sophomore Ariane O'Day (20:46.24) placed 106th, senior Ashley Charboneau (21:56.69), freshman Danielle Carr (23:16.84) improved by two seconds to finish 177th and freshman Briane Nelp (28:33.34) was 211th in her first outing.

The Lady Vikings were 18th out of 22 teams and third among league foes with 507 points.

Valley will take part in the Central Methodist Invitational at Fayette Saturday, then return there a week later for the HAAC Championships.
