Robert Gibson Gumm, 81, of Denton, Texas, formerly of Marshall, died Friday, April 22, 2005, at Denton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Denton.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall. Father Kevin Gormley will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Clifton City. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall.
Born March 25, 1924, in Flemington, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert B. and Wilma Gibson Gumm. On July 18, 1947, in Tucson, Ariz., he married Mary Kathryn Wittman. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall. At the age of 18, he drove from the state of West Virginia to Tuscon, Ariz, to relocate his mother and younger sister near the Veterans Hospital where his father was transferred. He started working for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp. in Tucson until World War II ended. He then worked for Western Electric Company for a few years until he joined Farmers Insurance Company as an agent in Tuscon and opened his own office in 1953. He later moved to Hemet, Calif. He retired in 1988 and moved to the state of Missouri. He was past exalted ruler and honorary life member for 39 years at the B.O.P.F. in Hemet, Calif., Elks Lodge No. 1740.
Survivors include one son, Robert B. Gumm and wife Donna of Denton, Texas; two sisters, Ada G. Knuth of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Carolyn Hathaway of Nogales, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Lisa Kathryn Gumm, Robert J. Gumm, Devin Shembri and Garrett Shembri; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Cox; and several nieces and nephews.
