Marshall summer school enrollment could be highest ever

Thursday, May 12, 2005

This year's Marshall summer school program looks to be the largest to date.

Patty Dierking, summer school director, said 1,252 students have enrolled and been accepted into the program which will run from June 1 to 28. While in previous years the school used only Marshall High School for classes, the addition of air conditioning throughout the district has allowed the program to spread out.

The Early Childhood summer program currently has 62 students. At Benton Elementary, where most kindergarten, first- and second-graders will attend summer classes, there are 321 students enrolled. Dierking said the district expected all kindergarten students to be served at Benton, but because of the increased enrollment two classrooms at Northwest Elementary will also be used for kindergarten. Northwest will also see 313 third- and fourth-graders this summer.

Dierking said these enrollment numbers put the elementary buildings near capacity, so there is limited availability for additional students to enroll over the next couple of weeks. However, room remains at Bueker Middle School and Marshall High School, where 261 and 257 students, respectively, have enrolled to date. An additional 38 students plan to take summer school classes at Saline County High School.

Dierking said parent information about summer school will begin to go home on Wednesday, May 18. If parents do not receive their student's summer school information or have questions, they are asked to call between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. beginning May 25.

"The district asks parents to wait until the 25th so the regular school term can be closed," Dierking said.

Using their student's 2004-2005 grade level, parents should call:

-- Prairie View State School at (660) 886-9066 students in preschool or entering kindergarten;

-- Benton Elementary at 886-3993 for kindergarten, first and second grade;

-- Northwest Elementary at 886-2993 for students in third and fourth grade;

-- Bueker Middle School at 886-6833 for students in grades five through eight grade;

-- Marshall High School at 886-2244 for students in ninth through 12th grade.

Dierking can be reach by phone at 886-7414.
