Kirksville shuts down Marshall
KIRKSVILLE -- The Marshall girls' soccer team broke out on top Saturday, but surrendered five unanswered goals during a 5-1 NCMC loss at Kirksville.
The Lady Owls connected in the 17th minute when a "through" ball from senior Emily Ragan set up senior Nicki Erickson's team-high 12th goal of the season. However, the Lady Tigers tied it two minutes later on a lob by sophomore Rebekah Blankenship then went ahead when a corner kick bounced off a Marshall defender into the net.
Sophomore Joy Bulen made it 3-1 at halftime with a low shot into the left side of the goal and sophomore Emily Schromm and junior Jessica Powell added second-half scores for Kirksville (6-6-1, 3-4-1 NCMC) -- which swept MHS for the first time in the many years the two teams have played at least twice a season, even prior to the current home-and-home conference schedule.
Marshall attempted 12 shots on goal, but freshman MacKenzie Kelly made 11 stops. The Lady Owls (3-12-2, 2-7-1), who were vying for a third straight league victory, step outside of the look today for a match at Sacred Heart in Sedalia.
