Crest Ridge 12, Sweet Springs 11 (10)
SWEET SPRINGS -- It took 10 innings Monday for perennial I-70 Conference softball power Crest Ridge to subdue Sweet Springs, 12-11.
The Lady Greyhounds withstood everything that was thrown at them, including junior Kasey Brooks' three-run homer in the fourth inning, until the final stanza. Even after Brooks' blast, senior Amber Winfrey answered with a two-run shot in the bottom half of the frame.
The Lady Cougars didn't lead by more than two runs at the end of any inning. Sweet Springs caught up in the sixth when a pair of errors set up senior Valerie Wulff's two-run triple.
Brooks, which finished with seven RBIs on four hits, drove in three runs with a triple in the top of the 10th and then scored what wound up as the winning run for Crest Ridge (4-6).
The Lady 'Hounds rallied during their final turn. Singles by sophomore Megan Dohrman and Winfrey and a botched fielder's choice produced a run. Sophomore Kara Kreisel singled home two runs and went to third on senior Jaime Vickrey's two-out single, but was left standing there with the tying run.
Winfrey and Kreisel each had three hits for Sweet Springs (3-7), which will have to play the Lady Coogs again Monday in the first round of the I-70 Conference Tournament at Concordia.
