George W. Wise Sr., 88, of Slater, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater. Rev. Michael Penn will officiate. Pallbearers will be George Wise Jr., Wayne Wise, Leroy Wise, Rick Wise, Mike Wise and Paul Wise. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Boggs, Chris Hagedorn and Rick Hays. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice, the American Heart Association or St. Joseph Catholic Church in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born March 22, 1916, south of Marshall, he was the son of the late Pete D. and Della May Woods Wise. On Sept. 17, 1936, in Marshall, he married Anna Jane Adams, who survives of the home. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a 1935 graduate of Mercy Academy in Marshall. He worked at the International Shoe factory in Marshall for nine years. On March 10, 1944, he and his wife bought a farm north of Slater, where he farmed until his retirement in 1981. He also sold seed corn for Dekalb Seed Company for 10 years and served as a director for the boards of Walker School, Central R-2 School and St. Joseph Catholic Church. He had been named "1989 Conservation Farmer of the Year" by the Saline County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Additional survivors include five sons, George W. Wise Jr. and wife Mary of Warsaw, Leroy Wise and wife Kay of Miami, Wayne Wise and wife Vicki of Miami, Mike Wise and wife Rachel of Texhoma, Texas, and Paul Wise and wife Pam of Harrisonville; three daughters, Jennie Boggs and husband Raymond of Warsaw, Ruth Hagedorn and husband Chris of Grain Valley and Connie Hays and husband Rick of Slater; one daughter-in-law, Judy Masterson and husband Jim of Chesterfield; one brother, Earl Wise and wife Helen of the state of Arizona; 31 grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 25 stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Daniel "Dickie" Wise; two daughters, Mary Boston and Ida Pisha; one brother, Daniel Wise; and two grandchildren.
