Saline County Sheriff Wally George reported Monday that the Second Baptist Church in Miami was vandalized sometime between Jan. 7 and Jan. 21.
Officers investigating the case discovered a homemade ladder which allowed the vandals to gain access to a window. Inside the church, broken glass from the window was observed around the pulpit. In addition to the broken window, the vandals also tore and pulled up the church's carpeting.
Also inside, the officers found an old shotgun, numerous Playboy magazines, several toolboxes and a bottle of vodka. The items were believed to have been stolen from a mobile home two weeks earlier.
The church, home to an African-American congregation in years past, is owned by the Friends of Miami. The group is currently trying to get the church listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The incident is not the first of its kind to occur in Saline County. In December 2002, vandals damaged the Antioch Church near Sweet Springs in rural Saline County.
