Marshall wins on soccer Senior Night
Seniors Ryan Guthrie and Douglas Hernandez combined for three goals and three assists Thursday during their final regular season home game, Marshall taking a 4-2 non-conference decision from Sacred Heart of Sedalia.
The Owls scored twice in the final three minutes to pull out the victory. A pass from Hernandez set up Guthrie and broke a 2-2 deadlock in the 37th minute of the second half and Guthrie's indirect kick produced a Hernandez goal with a minute left.
Marshall had gone ahead 1-0 on a Guthrie shot less than two minutes into the contest, but the Gremlins tied it when junior Nick Turner stuck in a rebound on senior Heraclio Perez' attempt blocked by senior goalkeeper Cristian Barceñas.
Senior Jace Moore's goal 16 minutes into the second half gave Sacred Heart (16-6) the lead, but the Owls tied the game a minute later when senior José Garcia's bomb from the corner of the penalty box hit the crossbar, goal post and junior 'keeper Michael Bolin's leg before dribbling in.
Marshall held a 16-9 advantage in shots on goal, Guthrie -- the team leader with 22 goals -- unloading six tries. The Owls (9-12-1) face NCMC rival Kirksville to open play Saturday in the Class 2, District 7 Tournament at Moberly, seeking their fourth straight championship.
