Field lesson

Friday, October 1, 2004

Students from Slater learn old-fashioned corn harvest techniques from Wayne McReynolds of Marshall, who shows them how machines (above) were used to rip corn from the husk in the process of shelling. McReynolds also showed students what corn looks like at different points of the harvest process (below).

The demonstration was part of the Cornhusking Education Day, which also included demonstrations on rope making, mechanical corn grinding and Native American harvesting techniques. In addition to Slater, third and fourth grade students participated from Marshall, Malta Bend and Sweet Springs.
