The Warriors scored twice in the second half to come from behind for a 2-1 decision over the host Owls for the championship of the Marshall Tournament, erasing some of the bitter taste inflicted on them by 4-1 loss to the Birds during the MSHSAA Class 2 quarterfinals at MHS on Nov. 11 of last year.
The Owls struck first when a crossing pass from sophomore Luis Flores found senior Ryan Guthrie in the 27th minute. Guthrie, who had tallied against St. Pius during the previous meeting, got it into the net.
However, the Warriors (6-0) evened the affair in the 17th minute of the second half when senior Cory Sharp got the ball over the head of senior goalkeeper Cristian Barceñas, Sharp struck again with two minutes remaining for the game winner off a pass from senior Dustin Wright.
Marshall put together its strongest outing earlier in the day with a 6-0 second-round romp over Southern Boone (0-4).
Guthrie scored two goals within a minute of each other early in the first half and junior José Garcia followed with four goals, two coming before halftime. Guthrie, senior Douglas Hernandez and juniors Trey Thomas and Miriel Reyes each logged assists for the Owls -- while Barceñas made two stops for his third straight win and second shutout of the season.
Marshall (3-3), which has several players banged up, will go to Sedalia Tuesday to face Smith-Cotton.
