Velma L. Hicks, 88, of Marshall, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Sweeney-Reser-Wills Funeral Home in Marshall. Rev. Russ Johnson will officiate. Organist Ramona Bullington will play "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Chris Hicks, Jordan Hicks, Josh Hicks, Jeff Johnson, Matt Marti and Jimmy Wayne Mitchell. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marshall. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Sweeney-Reser-Wills Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 30, 1916, in Saline County, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. Mitchell and Rosie L. Nicely Mitchell. On Aug. 10, 1932, in Marshall, she married John G. Hicks, who preceded her in death March 25, 1985. She and her husband farmed in the Saline County and Cooper Counties area for many years. She had lived in Blackwater for several years and was a member of Nelson Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, J.T. Hicks and wife Karen and Raymond Hicks and wife Marilyn, both of Marshall; two brothers, Harley Mitchell and wife Rita of Marshall and James Mitchell of Garland, Texas; one sister, Charlene Townsend and husband Marvin of North Kansas City; three grandchildren, Kenny Hicks and wife Teresa of Warrensburg, Vickie Johnson and husband Jim and Lisa Campbell and husband Will, both of Marshall; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Velma Jean Coleman; one sister, Audrey McCorkle; one infant brother; and one grandson.
