Willye D. Winston, 97, of Slater, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Slater United Methodist Church. Rev. Jerry Geisert officiated. Organist Bethany Weiker accompanied Mary Lee Sisney as she sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were Ronnie Bird, David Winston, Ralph Winston, Billy Winston, Dale Winston and Jake Winston. Burial was in Slater City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Big Bend Retreat in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Nov. 5, 1906, in Slater, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Avia Tillotson Dimity. On Nov. 27, 1927, in Fayette, she married Percy L. Winston, who preceded her in death Dec. 21, 1982. She was a member of Slater United Methodist Church and its Kum Join Us Sunday School class, United Methodist Women, Busy Bees Circle and church choir. She was also a member of the Slater Garden Club and Slater Business and Professional Women's Group. She attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg and Missouri Valley College in Marshall. She taught at Good Home School in Saline County and the Lawder School in Mexico before returning to Slater. She retired from the Missouri Division of Welfare as caseworker after 30 years of service.
Survivors include two sons, Delano Winston and wife Diana of Osborn and Harry Dean Winston and wife Marge of Yates Center, Kan.; daughter-in-law Linda Bird and husband Ronnie of Slater; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Archie Dimity and Earl Dimity, and one sister, Dorothy Hawkins.
