Rev. John H. Rich Sr., 87, of Sweet Springs, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Harry S Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Yokum Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Malta Bend. Rev. Barbara Carter will officiate. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home in Marshall. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs.
Born Jan. 30, 1917, in Malta Bend, he was the son of the late George and Lillian Dawson Rich. On April 29, 1943, he married Vernell Coffey, who survives of the home. He was a farmer and also worked at ConAgra Frozen Foods in Marshall, retiring from there. He was a member of Yokum Chapel A.M.E. Church, where he was assistant pastor. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.
Additional survivors include three sons, George Rich and John H. Rich Jr., both of Sweet Springs, and Lonnie Rich of Jefferson City; two daughters, Mary Scott of Sweet Springs and Anna Kemp of Columbia; one sister, Amanda Everage of Kansas City, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.
