Ethel Lavon Elsea, 93, Cordova, Tenn., formerly of Sweet Springs, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs. Rev. Charles Ahlemann will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. Born March 26, 1911, in Warsaw, she was the daughter of the late Anderson Johnson and Maude Hurd Johnson. On April 21, 1934, she married Richard Leslie Elsea, who preceded her in death. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Sweet Springs High School. After marrying, she moved from Sweet Springs to St. Louis, where she lived for 20 years. In 1954, she and her family moved to Vicksburg, Miss., and in 1980, to Shreveport, La. She later lived in Pawleys Island, S.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; Selma, Ala.; and Cordova, Tenn. She was a Baptist and member of Highland Baptist Church in Vicksburg for more than 25 years.
Survivors include one son Darrell Elsea of Biggsville, Ill., and one daughter Wanda Gray of Cordova, Tenn.; two grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Winston and Lueva Forbes, and one brother, Albert Johnson.
