Joseph H. "Joe" Melies, 93, of Marshall, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall. Father Kevin Gormley will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 7, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Marshall with military rites at graveside. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or American Cancer Society.
Born Nov. 14, 1910, in Koeltztown, he was the son of the late G.F. Melies and Catherine Winkleman Melies. On Feb. 27, 1946, he married Bertha Christina Brown, who preceded him in death July 3, 1997. He had lived in Saline County most of his life and was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Paul J. Melies Sr. of Marshall and Eldi Melies of Dumas, Texas; one daughter, Virginia A. Deems of Marshall; two sisters, Rose Boland of Waverly and Marie Mertensmeyer of Lee's Summit; one brother, Robert Melies of Marshall; three grandsons, Paul J. Melies Jr. and wife Erica of Mesa, Ariz., Kelly O. Melies of Marshall and Christopher A. Deems and wife April of Marshall; three great-grandsons, Bryce A. Deems, Drake H. Deems and Brody J. Melies; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Angela Marie Deems; two brothers, Alfred and Norbert Melies; and one sister, Agnes Weaver.
