Herbert Frank Nelson Jr., 86, of Sweet Springs, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs. Rev. Victor Smith will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. Memorials are suggested to Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron.
Born Dec. 8, 1917, he was the son of the late Herbert Frank and Catherine Ann Goggin Nelson. On Nov. 24, 1945, he married Edna Rhe Wylie, who survives of the home. He was a Sweet Springs High School graduate and attended Southern California University in Los Angeles. He was also a lifetime member of Sweet Springs Presbyterian Church. He enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps at the beginning of World War II. He served in Samoa for three years and then was stationed at Cherry Point, N.C., for the remainder of the war. After serving in the military, he was a storeroom clerk for 37 years at Kansas City Power and Light. He also voluntarily served as a weather observer for the National Weather Service for 60 years.
Additional survivors include one son, David Nelson of rural Blackburn; two daughters, Lynette Hunter of the home and Jeannette Hill of Appleton City; and three grandchildren.
