James E. Ballenger, 68, formerly of Nelson, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Capital Health Care in Jefferson City.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Nelson Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 30, at William Woods Funeral Home in Boonville.
Born Feb. 2, 1936, in Sweet Springs, he was the son of the late Ora and Mattie Saylor Ballenger. On Nov. 20, 1953, he married Virginia Stone, whom he later divorced. On Dec. 26, 1986, he married Hazel Bogeart, who survives of the state of Missouri. He worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation for 20 years, retiring in 2002. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1961.
Additional survivors include four daughters, Virginia Francis of Marshall, Marie Simpson of Nelson and Helen Newton and Amy Hager, both of Blackwater; one son, James Ballenger Jr. of Gadsden, Ala.; seven brothers, Ora Ballenger of Warsaw, Raymond Ballenger of Mt. Leonard, Vernon Ballenger of Nevada, Kenneth Ballenger, Melvin Ballenger and Howard Ballenger, all of Marshall, and Larry Ballenger of Slater; three sisters, Erma Evans of Mt. Leonard, Marilyn Henderson of Marshall and Patty Hall of Sweet Springs; and eight grandchildren, Charles Ballenger, Fletcher Francis, Daniel Kirchhoff, Cody Ballenger, Katie Newton, Bryan Simpson, Elizabeth Hager and Megan Hager.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Mikel Ballenger, one sister, Darlene Riley, and one grandson, Jesse Carl Ballenger.
