Morris A. Smith, 84, of rural Slater, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Rev. Robert Sisney officiated. Organist Bethany Weiker played "America" and "My County 'Tis of Thee." Pallbearers were Jerry Venable, Ron Venable, Mike Venable, Jim Wiseman, Charles Harris and Russell L. Plattner. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Slater or the American Diabetes Association.

Born Dec. 24, 1919, north of Slater, he was the son of the late Twyman M. and Gertrude Ayres Smith. On July 5, 1943, in Marshall, he married Mary Jane Gilliam, who survives of the home. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Slater. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 78 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4367, both in Slater. He was a retired farmer and lifelong Slater area resident.

Additional survivors include one son, Stephen Lewis Smith of Marshall; one daughter, Shirley Smith Brown of Slater; six grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
