Rev. Luther E. Smith, 79, of Slater and Macon, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at his home in Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, at Gospel Center Church in Macon. Rev. Jim Palmisano and Rev. Chris Parker will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. A second funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at Slater United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Gospel Center Church in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Jan. 17, 1925, in Hartsburg, he was the son of the late Jasper T. and Nellie Coots Smith. On Nov. 11, 1944, in Marshall, he married Dorothy Houston, who survives of the home. He had served as pastor of Gospel Center Church in Macon the past 40 years. He owned and operated Luther Smith Painting and Decorating in Slater for 47 years before his retirement.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Hazel Sparks of Bevier and Elaine Allred of Clarence; one brother, Hal Smith of Lincoln; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
