Robert J. Neel, 63, of Slater, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 25, at Slater United Methodist Church. Rev. Jerry Geisert will officiate. Organist Bethany Weiker will play "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and accompany Misty Rose and Jeanine Dowell as they sing "Jesus, Hold My Hand." Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 25, at the church. Pallbearers will be James Breshears, John Allen Breshears, J.D. Russell, Bobby Hirt, Buddy Bush and Harold Rossman. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery near Marshall. Memorials are suggested to the Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Nov. 21, 1940, in Irondale, he was the son of the late Elmer H. and Beulah Burton Neel. On Nov. 28, 1986, in Slater, he married Carol R. McDaniel, who survives of the home. He was a supervisor for Southwest Steel Co. in St. Louis until his retirement. He attended Slater Assembly of God Church and had resided in Slater since 1988, moving from Blackwater.
Additional survivors include four sons, Darrell Neel of Mount Leonard, Kevin Neel of Ironton, Robert Neel of Iron Mountain Lake and Greg Neel of Blackburn; two daughters, Deborah Russell of Blackburn and Sheryl Croney of Iron Mountain Lake; three stepsons, Clifford Breshears of Slater, Johnny Breshears of Bunceton and Marvin Breshears of Pilot Grove; four stepdaughters, Linda Hirt of Miami, Janice Breshears, Lola Breshears and Jeanine Dowell, all of Slater; two brothers, Charles Neel of Louisville, Ky., and Joseph Neel of Windsor; 28 grandchildren; 22 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and three grandchildren.
