George Jonathan Carey, 93, of Macon, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Samaritan Memorial Hospital in Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Macon. Rev. David Israel and Rev. Allen Vancil will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Macon. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Macon or the Masonic Temple and may be left at the funeral home.
Born June 9, 1910, in Macon, he was the son of the late Robert P. and Iva Wheeler Carey. On Aug. 20, 1933, in Columbia, he married Amy Elizabeth Norton, who survives. He attended public school in Macon and the University of Missouri. He worked for Shell Oil Company and was co-owner of Carey/McMillin Oil Company for 35 years. He retired in 1977. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge AF and AM, Eastern Star, Lions Club and Macon Country Club. He was also a former member of the Macon Chamber of Commerce and a board member for Mercantile Bank.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Suzann Martin and husband Homer of Tulsa, Okla., and Mary Lou Porter and husband Ronnie of Marshall; one brother, Robert Carey and wife Marie of Macon; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Carey of Macon and Faye Carey of Lake Jackson, Texas; four grandchildren, George Porter and wife Michelle of Marshall, Guy Porter and wife Corey of Nevada, Dan Martin and wife Elizabeth of Tulsa and Carey Murphy and husband Darren of Grayslake, Ill.; six great-grandchildren, Jared and Collin Porter, Katie and Brandon Murphy, and Sarah and Roby Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Ray and Dale Carey.
