Doris V. Smith, 77, of Slater, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at First Baptist Church in Slater. Rev. Shirley Case will officiate. Organist Bethany Weiker will play "One Day at a Time" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Pallbearers will be Melvin Mullins, Tommy Scarborough, Tim Scarborough, Terry Jordan, Britt Smith and Beno Messer. Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Lewis, Kim Taylor, Leon Jackson, Kendrick Davis, Pat Yates and Gary Yates. Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the MS Society.
Born Sept. 14, 1926, in Slater, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Margarette Sleyster Yates. On July 31, 1941, in Jefferson City, she married J.T. Smith, who preceded her in death Dec. 1, 2001. She was a member of Slater Assembly of God Church and a lifelong Slater area resident.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Mullins of Slater; one brother, Joe Yates of Marshall; three sisters, Marjorie Green, Mildred Scarborough and Ruth Samuels, all of Marshall; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
