Margaret Elizabeth Widel Brownfield

Margaret Elizabeth Widel Brownfield, 92, of Marshall, formerly of Malta Bend, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Mar-Saline Manor Care Center in Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall. Father Kevin Gormley will officiate. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jon Brownfield, David Harbison, Jeff Campbell, Jack Slocum, Shaun Baker and Montie Mikle. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Bob Thiel, Donnie Thiel, Bryan Thiel, Don Thiel, Louis Thiel, Kenny Bonen and Harold Morrow. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church.

Born Nov. 3, 1911, in Lamine, in Cooper County, she was the daughter of the late John Sylvester Widel and Sophia Henrietta Haller Widel and was the youngest of 10 children. She attended school in Pilot Grove and then worked as a nanny and a telephone operator. On April 10, 1934, in Pilot Grove, she married Ernest V. "Tommy" Brownfield, who preceded her in death Feb. 22, 1990. She lived in Saline County most of her life and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Malta Bend Garden Club, Little Extension Club and Grand Pass Saddle Club. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, crocheting afghans and baking and decorating angel food birthday cakes for family and friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Darlene M. Peters and husband Richard J. "Jack" of Waverly; six grandchildren, Susan Harbison and husband David of Nixa, Carolyn Campbell and husband Jeff of Waverly, Julie A. Slocum and husband Jack of Sedalia, Jon Brownfield and wife Melody of Olathe, Kan., Jennifer Baker and husband Shaun of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jeanne Mikle and husband Montie of Marshall; five great-grandchildren, Jeff and Brian Harbison, Scott and Christina Campbell and Jenna Mikle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Donald E. Brownfield and his wife Carolyn; one daughter, Judy, in infancy; four sisters; and five brothers.
