Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Ziemer Funeral Home in Evansville. Rev. Kenneth Raymes officiated. Pallbearers were Roy Helm, Nicholas Egan, Ryan Harvey, Mike Harvey, Richard Egan, William Benningfield and Charles Pointer. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville. Retired veterans conducted the graveside services. A memorial service was conducted at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, at the funeral home.
Born July 26, 1915, in Marshall, he was the son of the late Andrew and Susie Lacey Poffinberger. He married Willie Ellen "Shorty" Narron, whom he later divorced. On April 3, 1978, in Evansville, he married Willie Christine Calvert Benningfield, who survives of Evansville. He worked for Liquid Carbonics in Chicago for 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving four years. He was a past member of Indian Restaurant Association and Kentucky Horseman Association. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 265, serving four terms as post commander. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Forty and Eight Club and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Harvey of Marshall; two stepsons, William Benningfield of Bloomington, Ind., and Kenneth Benningfield of the nation of Mexico; one stepdaughter, Rhonda Harvey of Evansville; one brother, Ralph Poffinberger of Loveland, Colo.; one grandson, Roy Glen Helm of Marshall; seven stepgrandchildren; two great-grandsons, Kyle and Lane Helm, both of Marshall; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Poffinberger; three sisters, Nina McGraw, Mildred Pointer, and Ruby McCune; one stepson, Terry Benningfield; and one stepgrandson, Alan Benningfield.
