Herman W. Peters Sr., 95, of Waverly, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at The Living Center in Marshall.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Waverly United Methodist Church. Rev. Bob Payne and Rev. Jeff Maxwell officiated. Organist Charlotte Zumalt and pianist Julie Lewis accompanied Melissa Hinz as she sang "He Touched Me" and "The Lord's Prayer." Lewis also played "His Eye is on the Sparrow." Pallbearers were Jeff Campbell, David Harbison, Paul Peters, Mark Peters, Byron Peters and Lyle Peters. Burial was in Waverly Cemetery in Waverly. Memorials are suggested to Waverly Cemetery or the family's choice.
Born June 27, 1908, in Lafayette County, he was the son of the late Herman J. Peters and Margaret Miller Peters. On Oct. 25, 1928, he married Virginia White, who preceded him in death Jan. 30, 1985. He had lived in Lafayette County his entire life and attended Waverly United Methodist Church. He was owner/operator of Peters Orchard, retiring in 1971. He had served on the Waverly City Council in the 1930s and 1940s and had served on the Waverly Cemetery Board, on which he had served as president. He was a charter founder and served on the board of Waverly Bank and was past president of the Missouri Horticulture Society.
Survivors include two sons, Herman W. "Sonny" Peters Jr. and wife Marsella of rural Waverly and Richard J. "Jack" Peters and wife Darlene of Waverly; five grandchildren, Herman Mark Peters and wife Gail, Byron S. Peters and wife Cheryl, Lyle M. Peters and wife Lori, Susan Harbison and husband David and Carolyn Campbell and husband Jeff; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Hannah Marie Peters, one brother, Smith Peters, and one sister, Marie Sturges.
