MSHSAA Class 2 Boys' Soccer Championships
Friday-Saturday, Nov. 14-15 at Anheuser-Busch Conference and Sports Centre, Fenton
The three-time district champion Marshall boys' soccer team opens play in the MSHSAA Class 2 Championships today with a semifinal match against Duchesne of St. Charles.
The third-ranked Owls (19-4) are making their second straight appearance in the Final Four. For the No. 4 Pioneers, it is their sixth -- the first since 2000, when they placed second.
Duchesne (14-10-3) won the state Class AAA-A title in 1994, two years before the creation of the Marshall program. The Pioneers feature a speedy offensive attack which propelled them to a 7-1-2 mark over the last 10 matches.
The other semifinal contest matches Trinity Catholic of St. Louis against sixth-ranked Kansas City-O'Hara. Trinity is a first-year program formed by the combination of St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy and Rosary and led by former Aquinas coach Vince Drake -- who has won 11 state championships. Rosary, which also provided players for the Titans (11-12-2), hasd five state titles.
The Celtics have been to the tourney five times since '95, placing as high as second in 2001. A year ago, O'Hara (17-12-1) beat the Owls in the third-place match, 3-0.
