Lady Vikings win third straight
LAMONI, Iowa -- Freshman Malin Gollwitzer's "golden goal" in overtime Thursday gave the Missouri Valley College women's soccer team a 2-1 Heart of America Conference victory at Graceland.
After a sluggish start, falling behind 1-0, the Lady Vikings picked up the pace late in the first half and controlled the tempo the rest of the way. Valley tied the match 11 minutes into the second half when freshman Amanda Ruiz converted junior Maria Zinser's corner kick.
With freshman Lindsey Rhodus stopping all six shots by the Lady Yellowjackets (5-3, 1-2 HAAC) after the break, MVC kept up the pressure -- "keeping our composure in front of a very hostile crowd," according to head coach Derek Burton -- and finally finished off the match when Gollwitzer took freshman Lindsey Peck's pass and running past the defense for a one-on-one crack at the goal.
Sophomore Katie Cross had three attempts, Peck worked the wings -- as Burton said -- "relentlessly" and freshman Nicole Naito anchored the back line for the Lady Vikings (5-5, 2-1).
Valley, which has won three in a row and five of its last sixth, is off until a non-conference home date with Ottawa (Kan.) on Oct. 5.
