Vikings fall to D-I Tennessee-Martin

Tuesday, November 26, 2002

MARTIN, Tenn. -- Considering it was playing an NCAA Division I men's basketball club coming off a season-opening five-point win at St. Louis University three days earlier, Missouri Valley College's 77-58 loss Monday at Tennessee-Martin was fairly respectable.

The Vikings were tied at 12 midway through the first half when UTM went on a 14-4 run to take a nine-point halftime lead. Valley's shooting fell off, to 36 percent from the field, after the break and the Skyhawks pulled away by making all 10 of their free throws.

Junior Earl Bullock had a game-high 23 points for Tennessee-Martin, combining with junior Kenan Asceric -- who had 15 points -- for eight three-point field goals. The Skyhawks (2-0) took advantage of 26 MVC turnovers -- with the reigning Ohio Valley Conference "player of the week," senior Joey Walker -- combing up with four steals to go along with his 10 rebounds.

The Vikings produced in the paint, holding their own on the boards (34-33). Senior Chris Schulze scored 22 points and collected nine rebounds and senior Sam McIntyre added 13 points and six boards. Valley, though, could hardly buy a shot from outside -- going two of 14 from outside the arc.

The Vikings (2-4) continue their trek south, heading to Florida for a contest against the Navy Apprentice (Va.) school Friday at the Daytona Beach Sports Classic.
