Marshall netmen thump Boonville
The Marshall boys' tennis team didn't lose a set during Monday's 9-0 dual victory over visiting Boonville, one of the teams which will return to the MHS courts for the Class 1, District 4 Tournament next month.
The Owls were seldom challenged during the contest. Freshman Myles Yokeley began the rout with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over senior Ben Vanderhoof at No. 1 singles and senior Blake Garrett (6-2, 6-0), junior Jeremy Gilpin (6-0, 6-4), seniors Jose Benavides (6-1, 6-2) and Andrew Murphy (6-2, 6-1), and freshman Jesse Murphy (6-0, 6-2) continued mowing down the Pirates (5-2) in order.
Vanderhoof and senior Michael Chase gave Yokeley and Garrett a little trouble during a 6-3, 6-3 Marshall victory at No. 1 doubles, but the teams of Benavides and Andrew Murphy (6-0, 6-0) and Gilpin and Jesse Murphy (6-3, 6-1) disposed of their opponents.
The outcome in the junior varsity match was the same, a 9-0 win for the Owls. Seniors Jared Nichols and Scott Collins, junior Caleb Vandiver, sophomores Justin Barber and Alex Winning, and freshman Hunter Hsu didn't allow their foes to win more than three games in any contest while sweeping singles.
Sophomores Chris Kuhn and Patrick Guthrie and senior Tristan Barton and junior Nathan Carrico notched 8-2 doubles victories, while sophomore Josh Hoffelmeyer and freshman Richard Urtz had a tougher time -- pulling out an 8-6 decision.
Marshall (6-2) takes to the road today for a clash with NCMC rival Fulton.
