Wednesday is deadline for August voter registration

Monday, July 8, 2002

A government which proclaims itself to be "of the people, by the people and for the people" requires a public that is actively involved in the process. With this in mind, Wednesday is the deadline for voters to register to vote in the Aug. 6 primary election.

Hopefully, many readers already have voter registration cards in hand. Voting requires only a few minutes' commitment, and no matter what your location or socio-economic status, your vote counts just as much as anyone else's.

Especially in Saline County, where many of the races for county offices are dominated by one party, taking part in the primary election is vital to having a voice in who will make decisions about everything from county road maintenance and auditing of county departments to statewide issues such as funding of public schools and when, or if, to tap into the Rainy Day Fund.

Democracy is an imperfect process. But those who pass up the opportunity to participate in elections shouldn't expect to gripe for the next two, or four, years over their morning coffee cups.
