Winter hike at Van Meter

How I spent my New Year's Day. I went for a hike at Van Meter State Park with good friend Dennis Hopkins of Blackwater. Most folks don't think of winter as prime hiking season, perhaps, but the park shows a different side with decaying foliage wrapped around its ankles.

Cattails provide shelter for the many creatures that inhabit the marshland at Van Meter State Park, according to information posted at the observation docks. On a cold winter day, the wildlife is not in evidence -- most of it hunkered down to await warmer times -- but the cattails look pretty silhouetted against a cold blue sky. (Eric Crump/Democrat-News)
