A drag racer's life

Staff writer Rachel Harper was fortunate to ride along on a trip with the Thomases to Kansas City International Raceway's dragstrip on Saturday, Sept. 1. There were drivers of all ages and from all of the Midwest competing for champion of their class: Pro stock, Jr. Dragster, Super Comp, Bikes and much more.

The smoke seen coming from Super Comp driver Justin Couarrubias' dragster is a good thing. Prior to the start of a drag race, the cars do burnouts to clean and heat the tires to promote maximum traction. This car is owned by the Thomases. (Rachel Harper/Democrat-News)
