DAR Essay Contest Winners
Every year the Arrow Rock chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an essay contest on a topic in American history for fifth- through eighth-grade students at Blackwater, Hardeman, Orearville, Slater and Gilliam schools. On Tuesday, April 21, the winning students and their guests attended a reception with DAR ladies at the J. Huston Tavern in Arrow Rock. The essayists who won the contest are fifth grader Gentrie Blumhorst, Hardeman; sixth grader Ethan Borgman, Hardeman; seventh grader Karson Heying, Orearville; and eighth grader Sylvia Knox, Orearville. The students wrote essays on the following topic: "What message did the Gettysburg Address communicate to our war-torn nation in 1863? How are the ideals articulated in the speech still relevant for our country today?"
