It's Kinda Like ...
It's sort of like smelling fresh, hot, homemade bread but not being able to eat any of it. Or maybe a little like seeing fish jumping all over the lake but not being able to hook into even one. Or like passing a great barbecue joint, smelling "that smell" and knowing you don't have time top stop.
It's kind of like seeing the ocean in the distance without being able to find a way to get there and stick your toes in the sand and surf. Or maybe like knowing there is a crystal mountain lake nestled in a high-country pass and not being able to find the correct trail to reach it. Or like settling in for a night of camping only to find there is a hole in the tent and you have to cut the trip short.
It's kind of like settling in for the evening to watch a movie with the family and finding there is no popcorn to snack on. Or maybe like taking a big swig of ice cold cola only to find the glass held unsweetened tea. Or like sitting down to eat a thick, juicy steak and finding it to be overcooked and tough as shoe leather.
It's like catching the scent of roses and honeysuckle wafting across the yard without being able to locate the source. Or maybe like waiting for the sun to peak over the horizon only to see the clouds move in just in time to block the rays. Or like catching a hint of your lady's favorite perfume coming from the next room and finding it is just lingering there on an item of clothing.
It's like seeing the clouds building from far off, smelling the sweet smell of summer rain, and then watching it split and go around your farm.
A couple of days - and nights - this week have felt a bit like late September or early October, both times of the year that I really enjoy. But I am sure temperatures will rise back into the 80s and 90s again before autumn comes passing through. But the crisp, gentle mornings, pleasant days, and cool evenings have got me thinking about harvest time, apple cider, and pumpkins on the vine.
It's kind of like that.
