Whatever Happened

What ever happened to the little drummer boy

and the sheep in a stable lowly?

What ever happened to the shepherd who came

to lay eyes on a king so holy?

What ever happened to the carpenter meek

and the virgin he'd take as his own?

and the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes

to die on a cross alone?

What ever happened to angels in chorus

Singing glad tidings to all ...

and bringing a message of true hope before us

as it was before the fall?

What ever happened to that wonderful star

and the glory it shown on the earth?

And where is that angelic messenger

who trumpeted our dear savior's birth?

Have these been lost in the tinsel

and blotted out by lights ...

covered in greenery ...

and ensconced in manmade rites?

Have we lost the true meaning of Christmas

in the malls and the holiday shops ...

in paper and ribbons and elves and the rest ...

and angels on Christmas tree tops?

What ever happened to Jesus ...

and the gift of his father's great plan?

Whatever happened to peace and hope ...

And on earth good will for man?
